Phone scam

Posted by HPG on 31st May 2006 in Miscellaneous

I just got a second missed call phone scam attempt on my mobile number. First attempt was a few months ago.

If you haven’t heard about this before, you can go to this website to read more about it (quick explanation of what happens).

RSS feed on comments

Posted by HPG on 31st May 2006 in Website

For anyone who cares, I’ve just added an RSS feed for new comments to this blog in addition to the existing feed for new posts. It just occurred to me earlier today how useful that would be…

For those who don’t know what an RSS feed is, go and read this summary. In a nutshell, it lets your computer automatically check for updates on a website and inform you when there is an update. You will need a RSS feed reader on your computer. Opera has an RSS reader built-in and you can get plug-ins for Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Mangled leg

Posted by DJ on 30th May 2006 in Miscellaneous

No photos just yet.

Just waiting around the hospital for an operation on a guy who rode his motorbike into a truck.

Worse looking leg I’ve EVER seen.

He has an open dislocation of his knee: meaning his femur and tibia have come apart from each other (dislocated) and the femur was poking out looking at me through a 20cm wound over his knee. This has huge implications, especially with blood supply to the rest of his lower leg.

He also had a very mangled looking foot and ankle which also had bones sticking out. My end up with an amputation…

So imagine Norm’s finger dislocation compared to this knee dislocation.

Alan, I’ll need a lot of ‘power’ from you to put the knee back into place…

Bait *spit*

Posted by HPG on 30th May 2006 in Fishing

I passed on a fishing trip to the Tambo River with Abbott and Costello (and others) last weekend because I had some stuff that I had to do. They ended up catching some huuuge bream from the river which are worth posting here, even though they were caught on bait *spit*.

On yer bike!

Posted by HPG on 30th May 2006 in Cycling

I finally got back on the bike last night, nine days after my crash. In the back of my mind there was still this slight nervousness about getting on the bike. I had missed the Sunday morning ride because I hadn’t slept well - woke up middle of the night because of some lunatic doing a burnout on the street at 4am then couldn’t get back to sleep until 7-something. Then when I finally did get up at 10:30am, it was drizzling so I said to myself I would ride in the afternoon. It was still wet later in the day so I put it off yet another day.

I decided that I would ride Monday night because the weather was good and my joints were feeling OK. A new episode of Mythbusters was on, so I decided to get changed while watching that. Eventually, I got out into the coooold night (Thank goodness for the windproof jersey, although I am quite upset that as a result of the crash I tore a hole in my Assos…jersey). It was dark and the nervousness about bike handling was still there so I rolled down the hill quite slowly and turned into the side streets for the little hill circuit. Got a feel for the bike again, found the right gear and started pumping the legs. I decided that I wouldn’t bother with setting up the backlight on the computer/HRM and just rely on how my body felt to see how hard I could push myself. It felt like I was flying up the hill on the first lap but when I passed under a streetlight, I saw I was only going around 20 km/h. Hmmm…a bit of work to do to get the fitness back.

Anyway, I rode for about 30-40 minutes. Not much of a ride, but it’s a start. Just glad to be back on the bike.

Asian dunker

Posted by DJ on 27th May 2006 in Basketball

Has anyone heard of Darren Ng?

Chinese guy, final year medical student, used to play for the 36ers - hey, that’s similar to my profile, isn’t it?

Anyway, after our match on Thursday, I watched a bit of the following match that featured Darren’s brother, Ashley Ng (the similarities continue…). It was a low standard D grade match but this guy was obviously a good player. At one stage, he went on a fast break into an open court, an effortlessly DUNKED the ball! Now it’s not common to see people dunk the ball but especially a Chinese guy, around my height, playing domestic basketball!

I’m jealous

Fed Square Soccer

Posted by Geek on 26th May 2006 in Melbourne

I only caught the second half at Fed Square with Al and Lish last night.

(This entire post was done from my phone)

What would be a soccer match without flares?

TGIF VI

Posted by HPG on 25th May 2006 in Miscellaneous

I had nothing else for this week’s TGIF post so I dug back through some old photos. What started out as a nice quiet night…didn’t take long before it turned into the usual p!ss-up.

Goooaaalll!

Posted by HPG on 25th May 2006 in Melbourne

It’s official - with the 2006 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, football fever has taken over Melbourne. No, not THAT code of football. I’m talking the world game. While a lot of one-eyed Australian Rules fans may not like the intrusion of this other code of football, they may be surprised to know that some of the men in charge have ties to both codes.

It starts tonight with a friendly between Australia and Greece at the MCG. I’ve checked everywhere, locally and internationally, and the bookies are giving better odds for Australia to win with the most likely score being 1-0. This comes as a bit of a surprise, given that Greece are the Euro 2004 champions. I suppose there’s a lot to be said for local crowd support, even though there will be a LOT of local Greek supporters at the game tonight who won’t know who to cheer for.

To those actually going to Germany for the World Cup, stay safe and keep away from the nutcases. Take photos, particularly if there are any standout sights.

Car crash

Posted by DJ on 23rd May 2006 in Miscellaneous

More car accident photos.

My car was parked on the side of the road when a bogan reversed into it. He then drove off.

Fortunately, his partner/girlfriend lived next door to Ash in Numurkah so he wasn’t hard to track down.
