Clever idea…
But I tested the sound on a colleague (mid-40s), and he could hear it. I’ll have to find more test subjects.
Two people in my team – mid-30s and mid-50s couldn’t hear it until they held my phone close to their ear….
OK… had a bit more of a look at these sound bites….

I can’t heard Jack with this one… the media player visualisations show sound… but I can’t hear it…
Anyone with a little kid they can test this one on?? or wanna walk around little kids playing it??
Interesting…I can still hear that second one.
I tested the first one on several more people of various ages. Everyone could hear it.
Another interesting thing…I just re-read the title above, and noticed it says “pulsing sound”. I hear it as a solid high-pitched tone, but I just remembered my GM said he heard it as a pulsing sound.
Furthermore, some people found the noise REALLY irritating, whereas it doesn’t bother me at all. Some people find nails on blackboards unbearable whereas it doesn’t affect me. On the other hand, some metal-on-metal noises like rubbing cutlery together or metal ladles on metal pots, I find that REALLY unbearable.
More to report…
I tested this at home. The original sound from the SMH article sounds totally different – it’s a lower tone and I can definitely hear it. The second sound is also different at home, but interestingly, if I lower the volume slightly, it gets to the point where I can’t hear the high pitched beeping. I just hear the slightest, almost imperceptible, buzzing or ticking sound.
Like I said… you need to test it on a little kid…
