My first post from home…

I finally have my broadband set up at home - ADSL 2+ with speeds of up to 24Mbps. So far I’ve only managed 15Mbps, but still, it’s blazingly quick.

With Hay in the country, and DJ also back in town, we decided to get together for a little cruise down Beach Rd to Mordialloc today.

We met at my place at 9am for a 9:30am departure as DJ had to get fitted to my bike. He brought his sexy cycling gear from Adelaide and all we had to do was swap over some pedals for him to borrow my ‘classic’ Shogun Katana. Surprisingly, no adjustments were needed for the Shogie so that was handy. DJ rocked up first (very on time.. pay attention Nick) and he was greeted with me still in my PJs as I was having breakfast. HP and Al didn’t arrive too much later as they drove down. Hay was cycling over from Hawthorn but he had phoned to say that he was running a little late.

It was a great day for a ride yesterday and a handful of us managed to show up - enough to call it a YPR - for an early start. Norm made a last minute call not to ride partly because he was tired and partly because of an incident on Friday night when he cracked his skull. Speaking of which, he still hasn’t told Mrs Geek about this. Incident-free on the way to Whittlesea, except for a call on the mobile from Keith 20 minutes into the ride to find out where we were as we had rolled out without realising he was coming.

Alan turned back at Whittlesea for other family commitments during the day and the rest of us continued on to Kinglake West. It was a smooth climb to Kinglake West except for Ian’s “call of nature”. The descent was smoooth but none of us were able to get faster than 75km/h. However, I find the more windy descents like Kinglake-St Andrews or Sassafras-The Basin more exciting and interesting.

Back into Whittlesea, quick stop at Baker’s Delight then off again back towards the city. Another smooth run from Whittlesea to South Morang without a single stop, a close call at the road works but we all stayed upright, then on to Bundoora where Keith and Ian still had legs to do sprints up the hills - sickos…

Anyway, cut a long story short, we got back to Abbotsford safely. My computer wasn’t working because of a damaged wire but according to everyone else, the ride was about 105km. All up, a great ride.

For those that don’t know, there’s bushfires burning through about 1/3 of Victoria at the moment (well, maybe not quite that large but the fires are huge).

Anyhow, last weekend was mega smokey, and I thought it would’ve cleared this week but guess not.
