For lack of anything else to post about, have a read about the terrifying toothpick fish.

Yes, it’s very real.

Track Standing at Arthur’s Seat

Posted by Geek on 28th January 2007 in Cycling

We need 3 people or more for it to qualify as a TYP ride, right?

Anyhow, HP and I braved the fierce winds, pelting rain and blazing sunshine (i.e. typical Melbourne weather) to tackle Arthur’s Seat yesterday. I must say I really didn’t want to head out in the morning as the rain just kept on rolling through in phases but HP dragged my a$$ out and so we got rolling by about 10am (already a bit late in the day but we wanted to try and miss the ‘early showers’ predicted by the BoM) to see how far we’d get.

Hello from Japan

Posted by Hay on 26th January 2007 in Travel

Hey all,

Hi from Japan. Jase and I are still on our 3 week trip though Japan and are on the island Shikoku at the moment. Highlights so far have been Kyoto and Hiroshima where we met a very nice lady who helped us translate a menu and we ended up having dinner with her. The squid sashimi was still squirming when we were eating it. And lets not forget the onsens…ahhhhhh the onsens. People have been very friendly and the food beyond my expectations - which were high. Hope everyone is well.

Hay.
Harng - could you please post my pics? Can’t seem to get them up. Thanks.

Tour of the Suburbs or North Road Ride?

Posted by Geek on 25th January 2007 in Cycling

I really don’t know which one is worse, nor which one I will finish first (my guess is TotS as at least they wait!).

Went again tonight, felt good all the way down to Yarra Blvd, hurt like hell for most of the rest of the ride as I was trying REAALLY hard to keep up. Everything up to Doncaster pub is just such a b!tch… pretty much all uphill from Yarra Blvd I’ve just realised. And oh yer, mental note to self - remember to watch the road ahead still when climbing. I almost smacked straight into the back of a Ventura bus on Doncaster Rd because it over took me then it pulled over at a bus stop. Was too busy grinding away and just didn’t see it till quite late.

Another interesting accident that I saw was on Yarra boulie. Two guys rolling slowly waiting to join, the guy behind turns his head around to look at something then next thing he knows he smacks straight into the guy in front. Funny thing is, they weren’t going that fast and his front wheel was completely locked up with the other guy’s rear wheel (on the RD side) and they both just skidded for about 2m, stopping without any skin off their noses (don’t know about RD or spoke damage though as it looked like the front QR from the rear guy was wedged into the wheel of the front guy).

Anyhow, rolled in with the last few as usual for most of the ride, but my theory is that if I still manage to roll out with the bunch at each stop then I’m not doing too badly!

Oh yer, saw Mike but not sure how he went in the end. I thought he’d keep up but I think he may have caught some lights.

My legs are shattered… need to head out for a recovery ride.

Where the !@#%$ is that sound coming from??

Posted by HPG on 23rd January 2007 in Miscellaneous

Just a story about a minor problem I had with my car that I solved last night.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that the carpets on the front passenger side were a little wet. At first I thought maybe I’d left a water bottle on the floor and it had leaked. The dampness didn’t go away though - actually, it seemed to get worse. I left the window open for a few hours to air the car out, but I’d still end up with wet carpets and a damp smell. Even worse, water was actually pooling somewhere. Anyone who has been in my car lately will remember the sound of water swishing around somewhere in the front left of the car.

I eventually got around to removing the glovebox and having a look. It was a little bit wet behind the glovebox and I worked out how to remove another plastic section which it turns out was the fan unit for the heating/cooling. Had a bit of a poke around behind there and found that it was pretty wet, particularly around the AC condenser radiator. However, there was no pool of water to be found so next step was to have a look from the other side of the firewall.

From the bonnet side, I noticed water seeping out from somewhere. Eventually after more poking around I found it - the AC condenser drain hole! Somehow it had gotten blocked up with some gunk and the condensation from the AC unit had been collecting somewhere inside the system. As soon as I lifted the little rubber flap covering the drain hole and cleared out the gunk, the water literally spurted out.

Yay for me, problem solved.

Turns out it’s a reasonably common problem which I could have found the solution to if I’d just used my Google Fu.

Moving weekend

Posted by DJ on 17th January 2007 in Adelaide

Well, we’ve finally done it - no, nothing to do with pregnancy…

We moved houses on the weekend. I hired a 3 tonne truck to move all our things. Not that hard to drive but difficult to reverse!

Cleaned the new place on Friday afternoon, moved everything on Saturday and then cleaned the rental property on Sunday for the final inspection! Very tiring.

So now I’ve settled in nicely into our new place. It’s so much nicer than the rental property. Takes me longer to get to work, though!
