Flash Mob?

I think I just had my first flash mob experience tonight. Gin and I just finished dinner on Kingsland Rd (where you go for ‘pho’) and we went to Liverpool Street Station to catch the train home. Now you have to remember this station is busy. It’s kinda like a Flinders Street except 5 times as big and 10 times as busy (you can’t walk a straight line from one end to the other during peak hour). It was just jam packed with people screaming, jumping, etc. Police were on site too and I did hear an announcement towards the end over the PA asking the people to clear/leave the station immediately. Unfortunately as a result of this ‘event’ (whatever it was), they also ended up closing Liverpool Street Station for whatever reason and we ended up having to walk to Moorgate to catch a tube home.

Speaking of flash mobs, here’s a good recent ad that’s also filmed at Liverpool Street Station which may have been inspiration for tonight’s ‘event’?? (Tonight was nowhere near as choreographed as this mind you).

Slackers!

Whilst some of us braved the sub zero temperatures, shin deep snow, icy footpaths and blistering snow flurries to trek into work, others have been less productive creating some really badly proportioned snow sculptures…

YJOM January 2009

Keith – 667km
HY – 555km
Norm – 516km
HP – 416km
Tuong – 72km

Our first YJOM contest for 2009, and we are off to a great start. Good to have Tuong on-board as well. And good-timing too. Just in time for the start of the new year.

Quite a close one this month. HP went for the early breakaway at the start of month, with some decent road mileage. Gradually, the rest of the peleton managed to reel him in though. I started to lead with some consistently weekly mileage, from about the middle of the month. HY, as usual, pretty lazy at the start of the month, then going for his typical surge in the last 2wks. Luckily, I managed to hold off that comeback, despite some determined riding by HY during the 3-day 42+ deg heatwave we experienced.

Surprisingly decent mileage from Geek. Despite returning from his lazy European holidays, to a freezing cold London climate, he still managed a very respectable 516km for the month. Good enough for 3rd place.

All up, pretty close between 1st and 4th. Only about 250km separating those 4 positions.

Next month will be interesting. Tuong planning to do some commuting. Weather in London should be warming up, and I’m a bit more restricted with my weekend riding…

IWS Race 5 – Lantern Rouge

Windy, fine and dry conditions. Totally crap ride. Mentally didn’t feel up to it after the week of travelling. Tried to go with a ‘break’ right from the start line but used all my energy way too early doing a turn. After 2 laps I saw that we really weren’t gapping the main field so I kinda sat up…. and then it all went backwards from there. By about lap 4 I was seeing the back of the main field. Got lapped eventually but made it a point to finish anyway. I think my average cadence of 73 really told the story, couldn’t get the legs spinning today. And maybe I tend to perform badly in windy conditions too, as the last time I placed this badly was when I tried to make a ‘break’ and it was just as windy. Oh well, back to the grinder…
